Accelerated Reader® is a programme used in many schools in the UK to support children’s reading. It allows children to choose books at their own reading level and then to take an online quiz on each book they read. We have been using Accelerated Reader® at St John’s for the last few years and are very pleased with the results. Last year, children in KS2 read over 17,000 books between them. Many children read more than 100 books and one child in Year 5 read over a million words in the year!

I enjoy Accelerated Reader because it is fun and it’s a challenge, and it makes reading a joy. Sandra, Year 6

Reading is the best! If you are not good at reading, start now! I love reading.  David, Year 6

All children who can read in English from year 2 to year 6 will be borrowing books from the library and taking quizzes on these books.

The importance of reading for pleasure

Research shows good readers enjoy many advantages in later life. Reading for pleasure at primary school is a habit that will help your child at school and throughout their life. Fortunately, there is a lot you can do to help your child love reading. Please listen to your child read every evening and talk to them about their book. Reading to your child every day also makes a real difference.
